My Own Africa

I'm standing here beside myself
Declaring civil war
The boy I used to be
I just can't be no more
So let it end, and I'll descend
Into my own Africa

You subtly worked you trade
And tried to colonize me
Taught me to be a slave
And tried to civilize me
You've had your ball
Now let me fall
Into my own Africa

I know I'm a liar
I know that I'm a bloody hypocrite
Take anything you want from me
And I'll see that you will pay for it

Joy and woe are woven fine
She said, I said I know what it's like to be dead
As I sink into my heart of darkness
I dream of that dirty, peaceful bed

I'm standing here beside myself
Declaring civil war
The man I've grown to be
I just can't be no more
So paint the town, and I'll go down
Into my own Africa
Down into my own Africa
Down into my own Africa
Down into my own Africa
