They thought I was funny – I had them jumping with joy
And I needed the money – So I was their boy
It seemed like innocent fun – And a jolly good time
The casualties were none – And applause ain’t no crime
But my stomach gets queasy – When I step out on the stage
Though my performance looks easy – It’s hard to swallow the rage

And though we’ve barely said hello
I just can’t take it no more
It’s time to pack my old kit bag and go
I’ll show myself to the door
I know that it’s wrong
And I’ve been at it too long
I’m at an all-time low
So I had to leave the Minstrel Show

I would lead the parade – To bright melodious tones
Then I’d start the charade – Along with Tambo and Bones
I could babble my way – All through the burlesque
To the comic ballet – And deny the grotesque

And though we’ve barely said hello
I just can’t take it no more
It’s time to pack my old kit bag and go
I’ll show myself to the door
I know that it’s wrong
And I’ve been at it too long
I’m at an all-time low
So I had to leave the Minstrel Show

Now I’ve got some cold cream – To remove the greasepaint
But there’s no elixir – To extinguish the taint
It’s only a minor disaster – It’s nothing too grave
You’ve still got your master – You’ve still got your slave

And though we’ve barely said hello
I just can’t take it no more
It’s time to pack my old kit bag and go
I’ll show myself to the door
I know that it’s wrong
And I’ve been at it too long
I’m at an all-time low
So I had to leave the Minstrel Show
