Ineluctable Modality

Shut your eyes and see the signatures of all things
Waves like white-maned seahorses
Razor shells and lost armadas
I’m getting on nicely in the dark
Shut your ears and hear the song of all things
The menace of jack-priests snorting Latin
The drone of a misleading whistle
I’m getting on nicely in the dark

Young brides in disguises
Betrayals and wild escapes
Frisky, spurned, and undespairing
Told in textures, sounds, smells, and shapes

God becomes man becomes fish
Evening will find itself in me

Lemon streets with lemon houses
Zebra skirts and gunpowder cigarettes
A wine-dark sea and a reign of uncouth stars
I’m getting on nicely
I’m getting along nicely in the dark

I used to carry punched tickets as an alibi
In case I was arrested for murder somewhere
Walking to eternity along Sandymount Strand
The foul brine invading the air

God becomes man becomes fish
Evening will find itself in me

What is the word known to all men?
I am lonely here
Touch me soon, touch me now
Touch me, touch me, touch me, touch me, touch me

God becomes man becomes fish
Man becomes fish becomes barnacle
Goose becomes featherbed mountain
Evening will find itself in me
