How Life Begins

Old woman peeping
Carriage wheels creaking
Hearse rattling over the cobbled causeway
Tenement houses
Hurling mute curses at the sky
Oh, how grand we are today

Give us a touch - God I’m dying for it
   Forgive us all our sins
Give us a touch - God I’m dying for it
   Ah, that’s how life begins

No more pain
Too much John Barleycorn
Spent a lot of money coloring his nose
Six feet by two
In the worm-addled earth
Pushing up daisies with death stiffened toes

Give us a touch - God I’m dying for it
   Forgive us all our sins
Give us a touch - God I’m dying for it
   Ah, that’s how life begins

Some believe in the transmigration of souls
You could change into a bird or a tree
Or you could descend into nothingness
Fertilizing the soil with exquisite debris

Requiem mass
Lead us not into temptation
This is the power and the glory
Fire off a volley
Order up a pint
Four bootlaces for a penny

Give us a touch - God I’m dying for it
    Forgive us all our sins
Give us a touch - God I’m dying for it
   Ah, that’s how life begins
