Down There

The mirror’s cracked, the lamp is dark
The door won’t shut, the dog won’t bark
My chest is tight, I’m ill at ease
I lost the map, I lost the keys

I had to go
I had to go down
I had to go Down There

The handle’s gone, the screw is loose
The knife looks good, so does the noose
I got high, and I got low
All I know is I had to go

I had to go
I had to go down
I had to go Down There

I had to tempt the hands of pain
And comb the cat against the grain

Poisonous flowers, rancid perfume
Pasted smile, clown costume
The ceiling’s breached, the floor is sinking
Bad dream, perchance?  Ah, wishful thinking!

I had to go
I had to go down
I had to go Down There
