A Big Surprise

Sometimes things work out, sometimes they go up in smoke
Sometimes you swing for the fences and sometimes you choke
Sometimes you ain’t anything but the butt of a joke
And it comes as a big surprise
Some days everything is heading right on course
All cylinders are firing and you’re moving with force
Only to find that you’ve backed the wrong horse
And it hits you like a big surprise
One of these days you’re gonna get a big surprise
Bigger and badder than you can fantasize
You’ll be thrown to the sharks and have to improvise
Your way with that big surprise
You think you’re living your life like you’re the one in control
Every day one step closer to your goal
And then you remember that cosmic loophole
And you’re thrown off by a big surprise
One day you’re flaunting what every boy wants
Out on the red carpet with your cunning stunts
The next day you’re up to your neck with a pack full of runts
And it hits you like a big surprise
One of these days you’re gonna get a big surprise
With an image in the mirror that you can’t recognize
Everything you thought you knew just seems to vaporize
In the cloud of a big surprise
You might be sitting in your home feeling safe and sound
With the kettle on the boil and no one around
Then out of the blue you’re anxious, afraid, and spellbound
On alert for some big surprise
Sometimes life can be so sweet
Especially when you’re sitting in the catbird seat
But one false move and you’re feeling the heat
Coming on like a big surprise
One of these days you’re gonna get a big surprise
Hiding in plain sight behind a familiar disguise
That great unknown that you romanticize
          Is only a big surprise
One day reality is going to intrude
There’s only one thing that I can conclude
That day you’re going to get an awakening so rude
Dressed up like a big surprise
As I sit here thinking that I’m calling the tune
Like an objective observer, from all things immune
There’s a pin just waiting to burst my balloon
And stick me with a big surprise
One day we’re all gonna get a big surprise
Bigger and badder than we might fantasize
We’ll be thrown to the sharks and have to improvise
Our way with that big surprise
One day we’re all gonna get a big surprise
But there’s no need to fret or agonize
‘Cause this too shall pass and then give rise
          To another big surprise
